How Far From Plants Should A Grow Light Be?
A grow light may be positioned approximately 12–24 inches above many foliage houseplants, but the correct distance depends on fixture power, light distribution, crop type, growth stage, dimming level, and operating time. High-output commercial fixtures may need greater distance, while small low-power lamps may need to be closer.
Distance should be adjusted using the manufacturer’s PPFD map and the plant’s response rather than one universal measurement.
Why Distance Changes Light Intensity
Moving a fixture closer usually increases the light reaching the canopy and reduces its coverage area.
Raising it generally lowers intensity while spreading light over a wider area.
A lamp can therefore be:
Too close and too intense
Too far away and ineffective
Correct in the center but weak at the edges
Suitable for seedlings but excessive for foliage plants
Well positioned but operated for too many hours
The objective is even, useful illumination across the plant canopy.
Practical Starting Distances
The following ranges are general starting references rather than final specifications:
Small seedlings under moderate LEDs: around 4–12 inches
Herbs and compact leafy crops: around 6–18 inches
Foliage houseplants: around 12–24 inches
Flowering houseplants: around 6–18 inches
High-output commercial fixtures: based on PPFD mapping, often considerably higher

A 20W desktop plant lamp and a 1,000W commercial fixture cannot use the same hanging height.
Use PPFD Rather Than Distance Alone
PPFD describes the quantity of photosynthetically active photons reaching a square meter each second.
The same fixture produces different PPFD values at different heights and positions.
A useful product specification should include a PPFD map showing:
Center intensity

Hanging height

Measurement conditions
Commercial growers should match the target intensity to the crop and growth stage.
Distance is only the installation method used to help reach that target.
Check the Whole Canopy
Place the grow light above the center of the plant group.
Observe whether outer leaves, lower plants, and edge rows receive useful illumination.
When the center receives too much light while the edges remain weak, consider:
Raising the fixture.
Adding another lower-power fixture.
Increasing spacing between plants.
Using a wider distribution.
Dimming the center fixture.
Rearranging the canopy.
Using reflective but safe surrounding surfaces.
One extremely bright center point is less useful than an even distribution across the crop.
Signs the Grow Light Is Too Close
Possible signs include:
Pale or bleached upper leaves
Dry leaf edges
Upward curling
Localized heat stress
Leaves avoiding the fixture
Rapid water loss
Damage concentrated at the canopy top
Check both light intensity and leaf temperature. Even efficient LEDs can create a warm microclimate when placed close to foliage.
Increase the distance or reduce output gradually. Avoid making a large change unless the plant shows acute stress.
Signs the Light Is Too Far Away
Insufficient light may produce:
Stretched stems
Small leaves
Wide internode spacing
Plants leaning toward the fixture
Slow growth
Weak color
Uneven canopy development
Move the light closer in small steps or increase dimming output.
Allow the plant time to respond. New growth provides better information than old leaves that developed under previous conditions.
Match Distance With Photoperiod
Light intensity and operating time work together.
A lower-intensity fixture used for a longer daily period can sometimes provide a similar daily light quantity to a higher-intensity fixture used for a shorter period.
However, plants still need an appropriate dark period.
Use a timer to keep the schedule consistent. For houseplants, a daily lighting period around 10–14 hours is a common starting direction, adjusted according to natural daylight and plant response.
Commercial crop schedules should follow the variety, growth stage, and cultivation plan.
